BPH
The prostate is a walnut sized organ that sits under the bladder
and surrounds the urethra which is a
tube that carries urine from the bladder
out of the body. The prostate’s
function is to secrete fluid that carries
sperm. The prostate grows with age resulting
in constriction of the urethra. This
condition is called Benign Prostate Hyperplasia
or BPH. Half of all men over age 50 will
develop this condition. By age eighty, 80% of men will experience
symptoms of BPH. These symptoms can include frequent urination,
especially at night, needing to strain or push, feeling burning
or incomplete emptying, and a diminished stream. These symptoms
can affect lifestyle quality and, if severe, can lead to significant
bladder or kidney damage. Many treatments are now available and
non invasive methods of treatment such as medications, laser or
microwave are emphasized by this practice.
