The procedure is performed with you lying on your side with your knees pulled up toward you chest. The ultrasound probe is placed in the Rectum and takes pictures of the inside of the Prostate Gland and the surrounding structures. A local anesthesia is administered. Biopsies are obtained by passing a small needle into the Prostate under the ultrasound guidance. Most men experience little or no pain. The procedure normally takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete. The biopsy results are usually available within 1 to 2 weeks.
1. Obtain two adult fleet enemas and administer them 2 hours before your scheduled appointment.
2. You have been giver a prescription for an antibiotic to be taken 1 day prior to your biopsy. The purpose of this antibiotic is to decrease the risk of infection.
3. If you are taking Coumadin, Aspirin, Plavix or Vitamin E please inform the Urology Dr. This will need to be discontinued prior to your biopsy.
4. If your Prostate biopsy is done in our office you may eat a light breakfast or lunch the day of you study. If your biopsy is done at the Sedona Surgical Center you may not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before.
